The DÔME History

Harry Gordon Selfridge leased Highcliffe Castle from 1916 to 1922 as his country home, near Christchurch in 1916. He never completed the full restoration of the castle, but did make improvements such as steam heating and a new kitchen. He also invested in Christchurch town. Most notably, in 1922 he financed the construction of the Christchurch branch of the National Provincial Bank (previously HSBC, on the High Street)

Local accounts say he wanted the town to have modern facilities to match the grandeur of his presence at Highcliffe.

So while he didn’t personally “build” the bank in the sense of running one, He paid for the building of a bank in Christchurch as part of his local footprint.
